So Mucho Mexicano!

Calling all Sydneysiders! Have you noticed the recent surge of little taquerías opening up all over the city? I (Bee) certainly have, and in celebration of the expanding selection of casually cool Mexican/Latin dining options (as an avid Mexican food lover), I have been eating my way around town to bring you some of the best on offer.

Presenting my Top 3 Mexican/Latin Dining Experiences, as well as some Honorable Mentions, including my Favourite Dish and most Unexpected Experience.

1. EL CAPO (54 Waterloo Street, Surry Hills) - A canteen-style Latin restaurant that takes culinary inspiration from the street fare of Mexico, Puerto Rico and Columbia, and interior styling from Mexican Narco Cinema. Colourful murals that adorn the walls were created by Numskull and Roach.

Favourite Dish (so hard to choose) – Three Milk Cake

The Unexpected – The undeniably interesting and diverse menu, how every dish is presented like a piece of art and the wad of cash displayed unexpectedly in the corner.

2. EL LOCO (64 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills) - Authentic Mexican meets American Diner.

Favourite Dish – I personally can’t go past the countless range of Tacos, however El Loco’s cheesy Hot Dog is fast attracting a following.

The Unexpected – The Secret Taco! I am not going to reveal what was in the Taco I ate on my visit as the filling changes daily but, let me tell you, it contained a protein I ordinarily avoid. Was it worth the gamble? Absolutely. Was I happy to have been in the dark until after it was digested? Most definitely!

3. MEXICANO (Shop 2, 209-211 Ocean Street, Narrabeen) - A small restaurant of many communal tables, with shared plates, right by the beach allows you to drink like you’re in a bar and eat unaware of how much has been ordered.

Favourite Dish - Street Style Grilled Corn with Chipotle Mayonnaise-Lime and Cheese

The Unexpected – A new, popular and desperately needed addition to the Northern Beaches.

Honorable Mentions

AZTECA’S (140 Avoca Street, Randwick) - If trendy Mexican Cantina’s with pretty, pint sized dishes to share doesn’t appeal, but a charming, Sombrero wearing Mexican host singing Sinatra does, Azteca’s is for you. The generous portions of naughty food are perfect to treat a hangover, while the oversized Margaritas might be just the thing to create one!

MISSY FOXALL (18 Barrenjoey Road, Mona Vale) – I am yet to eat here but fully intend to after hearing that Matthew Kemp of Balzac Restaurant favours this restaurant.
”I have Pork Belly and Kimchi Tacos” says Kemp, who lives on the Northern Beaches.
